42nd HUMORISTS AT MAROSTICA
The jury’s report – Theme VICES
On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th February 2010 the “HUMORISTS AT MAROSTICA” Jury came together made up of:
Paolo Bertuzzo - President
Maria Teresa Costa
Maurizio Minoggio
Alessandro Pettenuzzo
Giovanni Sorcinelli
Alessandro Tich
Piero Zanotto
Organizing Committee made up of the Marostica Graphics Group
and with the extraordinary participation of Tinto Brass.
The Jury, having examined the works that have reached Marostica from 235 Authors of 42 countries, notes a generous participation which is also rich in enthusiasm, and at the same time perceives that it is conversely difficult to clearly define and remain faithful to the proposed theme – VICES. It has, however, recognized the value of a series of excellent works.
It therefore assigns the traditional awards regarding the cartoon and strip categories:
2010 INTERNATIONAL CHESSBOARD GRAN PRIX, CARTOON section to:
VALERIO KURTU (MOLDOVA)
“for the ironic synthesis of a captivating graphical work and of undoubtedly humoristic impact which deplores, amplifying the theme on vices, a bad habit both individual and collective”.
THE INTERNATIONAL HUMORISTS PRIZE AT MAROSTICA of the finalist works is awarded to the joint winners:
TOMASO MARCOLLA (ITALY)
ELENA OSPINA (COLUMBIA)
ANDREA PECCHIA (ITALY)
SERGEY SICHENKO (UKRAINE)
BERJASIT TUMYING (THAILAND)
For the STRIP section the jury awards the 2010 INTERNATIONAL CHESSBOARD GRAN PRIX to:
OCTAVIAN BOUR (ROMANIA)
“for the provocative representation of an upside down reality in which vices, instead of destroying, make a person’s identity”.
THE INTERNATIONAL HUMORISTS PRIZE AT MAROSTICA of the finalist works is awarded to the joint winners:
HUIG GERRIT (UNITED STATES)
SUSAN HOTTER (ITALY)
TONI VEDU (ITALY)
THE “SANDRO CARLESSO” SPECIAL PRIZE for experimentation or graphical-stylistic technique is awarded to:
CRISTINA BERNAZZANI (ITALY)
“for the proposal of a graphical pictorial technique based on the contrast of light and shade and on the gradual passage with swift strokes to minute expressive details, evoking the ambiguous relation between vice and virtue”.
THE “MARCO SARTORE” SPECIAL PRIZE available to the Jury is awarded to a historically known Author:
MARCO SPADARI (ITALY)
“for the consistent evolution of a personal and recognizable style, which through apparently simple elements, specifically solid colour geometric backgrounds and a selected colour palette, builds complex situations in a wise method”.
A SPECIAL PRIZE for this edition has been personally chosen by Tinto Brass and is awarded to: HUEY NGUYENHUU (UNITED STATES).

CCWPF International Editorial Cartoon Competition 2010

The Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom 10th International Editorial Cartoon Competition
1. The theme for the 10th International Editorial Cartoon Competition is:
The « right » not to be offended is not a right.
In Canada, Mark Steyn is brought before three different Human Rights Tribunals for allegedly “insulting Islam”.
Meanwhile at the United Nation’s Human Rights Commission, Arab states have for years attempted to make that a crime.
What started out with a fatwa against Salman Rushdie for insulting Mohamed and was dismissed by many as an isolated incident, culminated years later with the assassination of Theo Van Gogh in the streets of Amsterdam for the same offense.
In Denmark, cartoonists still fear for their life for having drawn Mohamed in newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
Meanwhile in Ireland, blasphemy is now a criminal offence.
How can we encourage vigorous debate while being respectful of religious sensibilities?
2. Prizes: three prizes will be given: a first prize of $1500, a crystal trophy, plus a Certificate from Canadian UNESCO, a second prize of $750 plus a certificate, and a third of $500 and certificate. All sums are in Canadian dollars. Ten additional cartoons will receive an ‘Award of Excellence.’ Regrettably no financial remuneration accompanies the Awards of Excellence.
3. Only one cartoon will be accepted from each cartoonist. It may be either in colour or black & white and must not have previously won an award.
4. The size of the cartoon should not exceed A4; 21 by 29.2 cm; or 8.50 by 11 inches.
5. The cartoonist’s name, address and telephone number must be included in the e-mail to which the cartoon is attached. A short biography of the Cartoonist should also be provided.
6. The Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom shall have the rights to use any of the cartoons entered in the Competition for promotion of our World Press Freedom Day Luncheon on May 3. Entrance by the cartoonist in this Cartoon competition is deemed acceptance of this condition.
7. The winners of the Cartoon Competition will be announced at the World Press Freedom Day Luncheon held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Canada on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2010 and will be advised by e-mail.
The winning names and their cartoons will be posted on the CCWFP web site: http://www.ccwpf-cclpm.ca/

ANTE PORTAS, the cartoon project book from Macedonia

ANTE PORTAS is a cartoon-book published in Skopje in 2008. There are 92 cartoons (including the front cover caricature by Predrag Koraksic) in this book of 72 pages and size 22x22 cm. The project belongs to free-lance artist Delcho Mihajlov and the publishing of the book is subsidized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia.
In his introductory essay "Balkan Ante Portas" says Mr Mihajlov:
"I had previously designed the project Ante Portas as "Before the Gates of EU and NATO," but I soon realized that the phenomenon of the gate was rather elliptical: whose gate, in fact, would we find ourselves before? Would EU and NATO become afraid of some great threat and exclaim: "The Balkans Ante Portas!" It is much too simple to believe that by opening a gate we can find ourselves inside EU and NATO. What if we try, and to our great dismay, find the gate closed? Then we remain locked inside our own walls. We all know the key is under the mat, but the mat is Ante Portas, outside."
The second essay in the book is longer and is titled "The Cartoon Ante Portas". Here writes the author, Zarko Kujundziski:
"The project Ante Portas consists of a series of cartoons on the theme "Before the gates of EU and NATO" created by authors from the independent Balkan states that belonged to the former Yugoslav federation, which now gravitate toward Europe and the world as independent subjects.
The gate is taken as a metaphor which unites two wide categories of meaning: border/obstacle and crossing/waiting. The first divides us into Us and Them, whereas the second leaves open the possibility of Us becoming Them. It is important that the metaphorical divide is not a simple door, but a gate. One can break the door with the head, but the gate can leave one with a broken head."

4th International Zagreb Exhibition of CARicature 2010

4th International Zagreb Exhibition of Car Caricature 2010 - Croatia
Honored Caricaturists (and all those who want to become one)
This year 4th International Zagreb car caricature exhibition 2010 marks the 112th anniversary of the car`s first appearance in Croatia. The car was driven by Count Marko Bombelles to his home in Vinica near Varaždin. Since those early days, in all its guises, the car has become an essential part of everyday life. “His Majesty”, the car, has become so necessary for work and play that it is difficult to imagine any activity which does not involve the use of an automobile. From basic functions such as travelling to and from work, to every other type of economic, sport, cultural, political, recreational, tourist, health, military, police or “romantic” pursuit. It is omnipresent, ever desirable and IRREPLACEABLE! Life without a car is unimaginable. We ask ourselves how did we manage to live without the car for thousands of years.
With message and slogan of this years exhibition: ”WITH CAR INSPECTION YOU CONTRIBUTE IN PRESERVATION OF OUR ECOLOGY”.
So our focus this year as well as a theme is going to be
CAR INSPECTION AND CAR VALIDATION CHECK.
With this theme we want to interest authors from around the world to warn public of a need to preserve nature.
This is a fantastic opportunity for caricaturists from all around the world to “speak up” through their drawings and show advantages and disadvantages of their majesty – the Car.
The main sponsors for this year 4th International Zagreb Car Caricature Exhibition are the City Government. They will be presenting the Grand Prix prize. Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) – Zagreb Branch will be awarding the First Place Prize. There will be two more prizes (special acknowledgement) and 7 special recognitions. The other sponsors will be revealed on the opening day.
This exhibition provides Zagreb and Croatia with an annual cultural and artistic show which is rapidly attracting international followers - with a theme instantly recognizable by all – cars in our daily work and life.
