Massoud Shojai Tabatabai: Professor John A. Lent passed away

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor John Lent (May 16), the distinguished American scholar and one of the most influential researchers in the field of global comics and cartoon studies.
Without a doubt, the valuable contributions and lasting research of this great scholar will keep his memory alive in the history of world comics.
Our friendship dates back to 1992, when we published an article about the works of Ares from Cuba in the specialized magazine Kayhan Caricature. Shortly afterward, we met in Cuba, and our friendship continued over the years. Professor Lent traveled to Iran three times, and we also met at several international competitions and events in the world.
It was a great honor for me to serve alongside him as the Iran editor for the International Journal of Comic Art. He also wrote introductions for my books and several other publications, including international yearbooks.
I extend my condolences to his family and to all artists and professionals in the world of cartoons and comics.
His loss is undoubtedly irreparable.
RIP.

Human Rights Association Istanbul Branch 3rd International Cartoon Contest 2026, Turkey

HUMAN RIGHTS ASSOCIATION ISTANBUL BRANCH
3rd INTERNATIONAL CARTOON CONTEST
Today, in many parts of the world, children are struggling to survive under the shadow of war, poverty, discrimination, violence, and inequality. Yet every child has the right to live in safety, to receive education, to play, to express themselves, and to build their future freely. These rights cannot be postponed or ignored.
Art can sometimes express with a single line what long reports fail to explain. Cartoon art, in particular, is one of the strongest languages of humor and criticism. It can make visible a child’s silent cry, an injustice, or the hope for a better future within a single frame.
As the Culture and Arts Commission of the Human Rights Association Istanbul Branch, the theme of this year’s 3rd International Cartoon Competition is Children’s Rights. Our aim is to be the voice of children, to draw attention to violations of their rights, and to create a shared conscience through the universal language of art. Because we believe that a world where children do not smile is not truly livable for any of us.
We would like to thank all artists who draw justice with their pens and nurture hope through their lines. Together, we wish to strengthen the hope for a world where children can live freely, equally, and in peace.
Because every child is the beginning of a fairer world.
Because if a child falls silent, the future falls silent.
And we know this well:
A child’s smile is the most beautiful picture of peace.

The 4th International Cartoon Biennale "Niko Nikolla" 2026, Albania

4th International Cartoon Biennale “Niko Nikolla”
Albanian Excellence announces the organization of the 4th International Cartoon Biennale “Niko Nikolla”, to be held in Korça, Albania, from October 30 – November 1, 2026.
ANGEL OR DEVIL?
An ancient question — as old as humanity itself. Yet more relevant than ever.
In every choice, in every system, in every public figure — there is a duality. A constant tension between what appears to be and what truly is.
This theme does not seek definitive answers. It seeks perspective. It calls for the courage to look beyond the surface — to reveal irony, contradiction, and hidden truth.
BUJAR KAPEXHIU — A FIGURE, AN ERA
There are artists who create works. And there are artists who create spirit.
Bujar Kapexhiu is one of them.
Director. Actor. Screenwriter. Caricaturist. Satirical poet. The creator of the first animated film in Albania.
An artist who did not conform — but stood firm. Who did not bend — but created.
Persecuted by a regime that rejected individuality, he remained free in thought and in art.

OPTICAL ILLUSIONS
The story may have begun 17,000 years ago in Lascaux, where one of our ancestors painted a bull with its legs raised in a cave. An optical illusion, perhaps? Thousands of years later, someone discovered the principle of the camera obscura, and it became clear what had happened millennia earlier. The story continued 400 years before Christ when Plato theorized the allegory of the myth of the cave using a visual trick, namely the shadows of objects projected by a fire behind them onto the wall, again in a cave. Another leap forward of a few thousand years: 25 photographs viewed in the space of a second and here is another optical illusion: cinema!
But what about the percentages offered by statistics that tell us two opposite realities depending on the point of view from which they are read? What about the youthful appearance that cosmetic surgery offers us, regardless of our actual age? What about politicians who manipulate information to make us believe that everything is fine? Despite this, however, we can still enjoy perception games that exploit the characteristics and limitations of our visual system. And we can thank the artists who show us strange worlds by creating ingenious optical illusions.
Our ignorance can also make us see things we cannot believe, but here knowledge can come to our aid. Some incredible phenomena can be explained by quantum physics, for example, or molecular biology.
In an age that imposes lies as normality, whether they come from the media, politicians’ statements, the world of advertising, or production systems, a world of appearances distances us from a life lived fully in awareness of our choices, distances us from our autonomy of thought and from the possibility of having an impact on society.
In this review, we entrust the excursus on the thousand optical illusions of our world to satirical cartoonists, to their ability to see through X-rays, to synthesize, to make salacious or humorous judgments, to look at things in a non-conformist way, to read between the lines of apparent reality. Protected by the language of satire, which does not allow censorship and enjoys full freedom of expression, artists have the ability and the task of uncovering the Chinese boxes of appearance for us and opening our eyes, often through the power of humor.
Thanks to satirical cartoonists, the City of Trento International Satire and Humor Festival will make us more aware, more critical, and therefore more free.
