International Cartoon Exhibition – Exploitation and workers’ rights

International Cartoon Exhibition – Exploitation and workers’ rights, a critical look through a humoristic Line!
At a moment like this, in which, with the excuse of the actual economic crisis, the exploitation and the assault to the rights of the workers, in order to pursue with the accumulation of scandalous profits by economic groups, the Portuguese Communist Party challenged Humorgrafe to collaborate in some journeys of reflection with the participation of cartoonists from all around the world and from different political and ideological choices to, from their own philosophical and humoristic thoughts, contribute to this initiative - Exploitation and workers’ rights through a humoristic line, with their artistic works about the important questions that at this moment, affect millions of Portuguese and worldwide workers: the unemployment, the low wages and the precarious job.
a) The P C P, in collaboration with Humorgrafe prepares a journey of enlightenment about the rights of workers. The struggle for the dignity of labour, the exploitation of millions of human beings and the outrageous profits of big business, increasing unemployment and social trail of destruction, the struggle of workers as a factor of rupture and change the life of the population, are elements compelling when we look at the world in which we live. We invite cartoonists from around the world to meditate on various topics within this area include: job insecurity as a factor in the return to a past without rights, low wages versus paying a fortune for managers and scandalous profits, unemployment and its trail of poverty, destruction wealth and productive capacity.
b) Each artist can participate up to 4 entries, in black and white (one colour) sent by e-mail (300 dpis - jpeg) to humorgrafe_oms@yahoo.com . Sending work to the exhibition requires the waiver of copyright for publications (with no lucrative aims) of these journeys.
c) The deadline is February 26th 2010, and the exhibition opened next March 18th, in Lisbon. Eventually the exhibition will be displayed in other locations.
d) The work will be selected by jury for the exhibition catalogue and other publications involved in this event - Exploration and workers' rights by the stroke of humor. The campaign held it during the years 2010 / 2011. Selected works may be used by prosecutors in this period of this initiative. All artists will be notified and will receive two copies of all publications (on paper) where they used their work.
e) It is a project with the organization of the Portuguese Communist Party, Humorgrafe production, and as artistic director Osvaldo Macedo de Sousa.

20th International Satire Exhibition Studio d’Arte Andromeda

20th International Satire Exhibition “Trento between reality and madness” - Italy
Subject: Italian Land
On 2 August 1847 the Austrian chancellor Klemens von Metternich, wrote: “The word Italy is a geographical expression...”
After 13 years Italy became a State despite the skepticism of those who pretended to forget that the word “Italy” to the greatest artists of Europe meant more than just a geographical oddity, but represented civilisation, knowledge, culture, art and all the highest expressions produced by humans throughout history.
The most enlightened leaders of world culture, for centuries, considered the “Grand Tour”, travelling in Italy, as an essential step in their education and training.
What remains today, after 150 years of that hope to merge the different souls present on the peninsula called Italy and the desire to make a single witness and continuation of the immensity of which we are custodians of gifts?
Our review of XX satire is devoted to a discussion on Italy, which for us is first of all, cultural identity, identity that we feel, every day, in danger of extinction.
We are dealing with a world that continually sacrificed in the name of globalising short term illusions, that wealth of knowledge built with slow wisdom from those who lived with the thought, turning to us, to the future.
To you, to your poetic, ironic, irreverent, bright, satiric ferocity, pick these signals, the thoughts and emotions related to the land of Italy and represent them in terms of your art and your land.
REGULATION
Authors may submit an unlimited number of works, Studio d’Arte Andromeda reserving the right to expose those, which, in its sole discretion, considers most adherents to the theme.
The works must be original, can be made with any technique, and must adhere strictly to the theme.
Maximum size allowed: A3.
The works must arrive at the Studio d’Arte Andromeda via Malpaga, 17 - 38122 Trento ITALY, before (DEADLINE EXTENDED) 15 May 2010.
The date of the inauguration will be notified in time to all participants.
The works will be returned on demand.
The Organisation Committee will keep the prize-winner and signal works.
The Studio reserves the right to print a catalog with the most significant works and the right to use the same access to information, news and documents about the exhibition.
The catalog will be delivered during the opening or sent on request with the works.

Humour can save the daily -The Australian

Hi all,
Cartoonists have received some good pro-active coverage in today's The Australian.
CARTOONISTS may have played a crucial role in the Australian newspaper industry - and they may have been lauded by John Hartigan, chairman and chief executive of News Limited (publisher of The Australian) at an exhibition opening several weeks ago - but the scribblers fear they are being slowly squeezed out of existence.
Nevertheless, they believe cartoons could be the key to luring younger readers back to newspapers.
Hartigan called a truce with his occasional foe ABC managing director Mark Scott last month to launch an exhibition of some of Australia's best political cartoons.
"Mark and I don't agree on everything," Hartigan said. "But I am sure he would acknowledge that while there are things broadcasters do better than newspapers, political cartooning isn't one of them.
"This great craft is not immune to new technology, but it remains an art that finds its best expression in newspapers."

American caricaturist David Levine passed away (December 20, 1926 – December 29, 2009)

World-famous caricaturist David Levine dies at the age of 83 on Tuesday at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan of prostate cancer and complications from other ailments. He was diagnosed with the eye disease macular degeneration in 2006.
Levine's drawings of politicians, literary people and historical figures typically had large heads and exaggerated features. Especially his political portraits showed the mind of an artist worriedly concerned about the world in which he lived: Among his most famous images is that of President Lyndon B. Johnson pulling up his shirt to reveal that his gallbladder operation scar was shaped like the map of Vietnam.
Levine's work appeared in The New York Review of Books, Esquire, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, Time and The New Yorker, among other publications.
Levine also did watercolor paintings, many depicting New York scenes.
