Catalog of the 20th International Cartoon Exhibition, Zagreb 2015, Croatia

A couple of days ago received the new catalog Zagreb 2015, the 20th International Cartoon Exhibition, from Croatia. The standard 19x19 cm sized catalog has 96 pages, half of which are in color and the other half with gray scale images. Davorin Trgovcevic, president of the Croatian Cartoonist Association, celebrates the 20th anniversary of their festival in his introductory article, "The Birthday". Admittedly, one looks for one more article portraying the aspects of the theme with humorous touches (like the one in the previous edition's catalog by late HANS, the cartoonist). Well, a suggestion only, a report of the jury explaining a bit of the grounds for their decision to award particular works would do as much better: This kind of an intellectual essay used to be a pillar of strength for most festival catalogs until recently, but mostly neglected nowadays, possibly due to problems of translation or shortness of time. Why, because, organising the exhibition with an already published (checked and proof-read before of course) catalog in a month's time after the jury meeting needs great effort and attention. And Zagreb International Cartoon Exhibition does this as a tradition which not many cartoon festivals could belong.
Out of ten participants from Turkey, three cartoonists' works are selected (one is awarded by the way) for the catalog: Musa Gumus, Oguz Gurel, and Halit Kurtulmus.
The stone-age artist by Gerald Peigneux from France, and two Picasso cartoons by Grzegorz Weigt from Poland and Erico Junqueira Ayres from Brazil made me smile the first sight I can remember. You can also decide your best cartoons in the catalog, just click here. You might also get a signed copy by contributing only 20 USD here.
My thanks to HDK for sending me this precious book of contemporary humor.

Catalog 6th International Tourism Cartoon Competition 2014, Turkey

Received yesterday the newly-published catalog of the 6th International Tourism Cartoon Competition 2014, Turkey. 22.7x23 cm in size (a bit larger than my scanner's, so the cover image above is cropped of top and bottom), the full-color catalog has 208 pages. This recent edition they also added the young competitors category which brought 56 pages more compared to the previous one of 2013. The book contains 186 finalist works in both adult and youth category, reduced from 920 works by 489 cartoonists representing 60 countries. The prizes were all-inclusive holidays for two persons each in 5-star hotels in Turkey as was the theme: "All-inclusive Holiday".
What this catalog brought new to me among others is the extraordinary art of Anon Anindito from Indonesia. Quite unusual, kind of bitter, in humor, the artist also has a masterly technique to portray the scene. None of his three works in the catalog is awarded probably because not directly related to the recent edition's theme.
The catalog is available now in PDF here which is downloadable also to be printed if you are an enthusiast.
My thanks to Nazmi Kozak, the publisher and member of the organizing committee, who sent me this book of amusing cartoons.

Is the Museum of Caricature in Warsaw, Poland, being liquidated by the City Hall?

Officials from the Warsaw City Hall decided to liquidate the Museum of Caricature in Warsaw. They want the caricature museum to be part of the Museum of Warsaw. It is acting to the detriment of culture in Warsaw, Poland, and Europe. There is no substantive evidence for such a connection. Let us do everything to defend the Caricature Museum, which is one of the most original cultural institutions in Europe. Say "no" to thoughtlessness. On this page we will keep you informed about what is happening in this case. Join us!
Perhaps not everyone saw the drawing by Marcin Bondarowicz (below). We also ask other writers who wish to comment on the absurd idea of liquidation of the Museum of Caricature to send in their work. We will post them here. Also we pass the Warsaw city officials. Read more.

Results of the 46th WORLD GALLERY OF CARTOONS Skopje 2015, Rep. Macedonia

Results of the international jury on the 46th WORLD GALLERY OF CARTOONS Skopje 2015, Rep. Macedonia
Dear friends cartoonists,
In the jubilee year when OSTEN celebrates 70 years since its establishment (1 January 1945) in the 46th edition of its WORLD GALLERY OF CARTOONS Skopje 2015, we appear again before the world public to convey the messages from the cartoonists coming from all over the world. Consistent with our commitment to promoting art on paper, again this year one of the basic criteria to participate in the World Gallery of Cartoons was to apply with original, hand-drawn cartoons, satirical drawings, and comics. We are pleased that cartoonists from all over the world welcome this commitment of ours and recognize our endeavors to encourage genuine artistic values in the creation of cartoons. That is, after all, also confirmed by the traditionally great number of participants in our event: this year 206 cartoonists with 680 original works from 50 countries all over the world have applied!
The figures speak for themselves in context of the interest shown to participate in the competition; on the other hand, the issue of the quality of the works sent was entrusted to real professionals in the field of cartoons: the first selection was made by prominent cartoonists from Bulgaria, Alla and Chavdar Georgievi, while members of the international jury deciding on the prizes consisted of: Bernd Pohlenz (Germany), Murat Erdoğan (Turkey), Stane Jagodič (Slovenia), Midhad Ajanović Ajan (Sweden), and Mice Jankulovski (Macedonia).
Their shared assessment is that this year’s edition of World Gallery of Cartoons received cartoons, satirical drawings, and comics of exceptional quality, both with regard to the very idea and conveying the message, and to the artistic expression… which, by the way, made their work even more difficult. Still they agree on this results:
FIRST AWARD FOR CARTOON - Mehmet KAHRAMAN, Turkey (Top)
FIRST AWARD FOR COMIC/STRIP - Pavel CONSTANTIN, Romania
FIRST AWARD FOR SATIRICAL DRAWING - Mikhail ZLATKOVSKY, Russia
SPECIAL AWARDS
Agim KRASNIQI - KrAgi, Kosovo

Angelo CAMPANER, Italy
Blaze DOKULESKI, Macedonia
Halit KURTULMUS AYTOSLU, Turkey

Mirko MOLNAR, Serbia

AWARD CICO (for Macedonian Cartoonist) - Darko MARKOVIC.
You can see the Awarded Cartoonists here.
CONGRATULATIONS to the winners, and many thanks to all participants of the 46th WORLD GALLERY OF CARTOONS Skopje 2015!
As Murat Erdogan (the jury member and author of the foreword in the catalog) said: All cartoonists who sent their works to the 46th World Gallery of Cartoons Skopje 2015 contributed to the philosophy of life which challenge the problems of the world and encourage peace, freedom and smile over the world, and they will leave their marks to the history of cartoons.
On the behalf of the OSTEN team, I'm sending you best regards and… see you next year!
Kornelija Koneska, CEO
P.S. Follow the updates of the opening of the exhibition of cartoons and the official announcement of the awards in OSTEN Gallery tomorrow, on 28th May 2015 at 20:20 h. on the World Gallery of Cartoons FB fun page...

Another false competition seems to be on the net again

Received an e-mail with the regulation of a new cartoon contest:
THE INTERNATIONAL CARTOON COMPETITION 2015 -- MADE IN CHINA.
The themes of the competition:
a) MADE IN CHINA
b) FREE.
Participant send electronic edition (JEPG, 300 dpi) to: zjjxnnsg@126.com . If your works are selected, you send the original works to us.
Well, to whom to send the original works if selected?
To the e-mail address that seems to be the only organisator for the time being?
If not selected, what would happen with all the 12 cartoon ideas (maximum 6 each theme) of each participating cartoonist? Plagiarized, copied, sold to third parties?!
It is already 3 years now that we haven't had a pirate cartoon competition and finally it emerged again. Somebody is looking for the original ideas of honest creative cartoonists to paint or sell cartoons by his/her name! Not very difficult to guess the name(s)!
No cartoonist will participate I hope, no website shall put the regulation or promote this fishy competition MADE IN CHINA.
If any cartoon website editor doesn't want to belong to the gang of thieves of cartoon ideas, s/he should take the emergency action and delete the false announcement of the fake competition.
See the recent history of fake cartoon competitions here.
