The 24th World Press Freedom Canada International Editorial Cartoon Competition 2024

24th World Press Freedom Canada International Editorial Cartoon Competition
The theme of the 24th International Editorial Cartoon Competition is:
Artificial Intelligence: yes or no?
Some believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will solve all our problems while it inspires apocalyptic talk in others.
AI can help journalists gather information, but “deep fakes” and voice simulators capable of generating believable audio segments, can sow doubt about the authenticity of content and put democracy at risk.
On the other hand, some politicians brandish the term “fake news” to denounce opposing opinions or deny reality.
Finally, using AI to generate illustrations on demand robs artists of their work and infringes on their copyright.
Fortunately, AI hasn’t yet figured the number of fingers on one hand.
Competition rules
Three prizes will be awarded:
First prize: $1500 plus a Certificate from the Canadian Commission for UNESCO
Second prize: $1000
Third prize: $500.
All sums are in Canadian dollars.
Ten additional cartoons will receive an Award of Excellence, which are not remunerated.
Only one cartoon may be submitted by each participant, either in colour or black and white. It must not have won an award previously.
World Press Freedom Canada reserves the right to use the winning cartoons for promotion of the Cartoon Competition.
The winners of the Cartoon Competition will be announced on Thursday May 2, 2024, the eve of World Press Freedom Day.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

ATTENTION!!! WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE ESSENCE OF THE CARTOON!
Cartoon is line art reflected in black and white colors. Colored cartoons, which became widespread with computer technology in the 1990s, create some problems. 1-It increases printing and photocopying costs. 2-As a result of the cartoons being drowned in colors, the main subject that is intended to be reflected is pushed into the background. However, the essence of the cartoon is black and white. The cartoon should reflect the subject it will explain in a practical way, with only lines. For this reason, starting from this year, we will accept the cartoons sent to the contest ONLY WITH BLACK LINES ON A WHITE BACKGROUND (Grayscale is not accepted).

1 – The contest is open to all (over 18 years) amateur or professional cartoonist or any one who could submit a cartoon regardless individual's race, gender, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, or other protected characteristic.

B) Free Subject
Any topic can be drawn.

3 – All Submissions must be in the form of cartoon. Any painting or illustrations will not be accepted and will be disqualified. Cartoons must be without words.

4 – Cartoons to be sent to the contest must be BLACK - WHITE and original. Size: A4 or A3. Each participant will write their name, surname, address, telephone and e-mail address on the back of the cartoon and send a photo and short CV.
