We have received testimony about serious irresponsibility in cartoon contests

We have received testimony about serious irresponsibility in cartoon contests

Submitted by Humor Sapiens on Tue, 27/01/2026 - 13:41

Dear colleagues at Humor Sapiens, I am submitting the following testimony for your consideration, with the aim of respectfully requesting that you consider publishing it in your media outlet.

Given its relevance to the defense of artistic practice and ethical responsibility in the cultural sphere, I offer this testimony regarding ethical responsibility in graphic humor competitions:

In 2025, I was awarded First International Prize at the Marul de Aur festival, a recognition that included a diploma, trophy, and cash prize.

Despite numerous respectful communications and a prolonged wait, these commitments were not fulfilled, leaving the prize contingent upon administrative excuses and repeated silence.

This situation contrasts sharply with my experience in other international competitions in which I have participated, where commitments were honored without difficulty.

I share this testimony not out of resentment, but out of respect for art and artists, and with the purpose of providing information that will allow the creative community to make informed decisions when participating in cultural events.

Normalizing silence in the face of these situations only contributes to their repetition.

Currently, the 2026 edition of the Marul de Aur competition is circulating with the same prizes.

Please accept my sincere thanks and best wishes for your work and future projects.

Cartoonist – Colombia

Dear Organizer,
The Regulations of your 42nd Edition the International Festival of Satire and Humor “Golden Apple” 2026 states there are cash prizes to the winners in three competition sections. Yet the amount and the currency of the cash prizes are not mentioned clearly in the regulations. While many organizations are mentioned as the supporters of the event, the exact sponsor(s) of the cash prizes and how or when they are to be paid to the winners is not clear.
Romania being a member country in the European Union, certainly I would like to participate in your international festival if such questions are explicitly answered.
Many thanks for your consideration in advance.

The color catalog of the International Cartoon Festival in Saitama 2025, Japan

Received a week ago the color catalog of the International Cartoon Festival in Saitama 2025, Japan. 2025 was the 35th year of the festival. I participated in the event with two cartoons of mine, one titled "Thinking the future" on the theme of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and the second one titled "So hot" of Free theme. Works on both themes by 29 Japanese and 27 foreign artists are included in the catalog of the exhibition that took place at Plaza North in November 2025.
Saitama City is the place where Rakuten Kitazawa - the father of modern cartoon in Japan - spent his later years. The Saitama Municipal Cartoon Art Musem in the home to Kitazawa in his later years hold the Saitama-City Rakuten-Kitazawa Manga Awards competition each year. In 2025 they held the 40th edition and the winning cartoons are displayed on the museum website here (They are not included in this cartoon book anymore). See the Kitazawa Rakuten Manga Award winning cartoon down this post.
The standard A4-sized (21x29.7 cm) catalog of "The Best Cartoons of Nippon" has almost 70 pages this time, about 45 of them covering the color and the monochrome cartoons participated in the festival and selected for the catalog. The remaining pages are the lists of the Japanese and the Foreign artists with their personal histories in both Japanese and English. With this perfectly designed book of art in hand, it is possible to compare the style and wit of the native and overseas manga/cartoon artists and enjoy the great humour in their works.
From Turkey are published the works of the following cartoonists in the catalog: Hüsnü Berkalp Üstün, Kamil Yavuz, Kemal Özyurt, Muammer Kotbaş, Seyit Saatçi, and Hüseyin Çakmak from Cyprus.
Thank you to the festival organizers and the staff of Plaza North who sent me this great collection of manga/cartoon art.

The International Cartoon Contest "BY BUS" 2026, Estonia

International Cartoon Contest "BY BUS"
The Estonian Humour Museum, in cooperation with its partners, international bus company Lux Express and @Tallinn Bus Station (Tallinna Bussijaam), announces an international cartoon contest on the theme: "BY BUS".
Theme Description: The content of the cartoons must be related to bus transport in its broadest sense. We welcome works reflecting bus travel, bus stations, drivers, and passengers at both local and international levels. Is the bus just a vehicle or a social phenomenon? What happens on a long journey? How does the world look through a bus window? Etc. We are looking for a witty and clever approach!
Prize Fund:
• I Prize – 750 € and diploma
• II Prize – 500 € and diploma
• III Prize – 250 € and diploma
• 2 Special Prizes – 150 € each and diploma (Intended for Estonian cartoonists to encourage local participation if they do not reach the top three, or a special prize from Lux Express).
