The 50th Italian Lies championship graphics section contest dedicated to Lie 2026, Italy

The Italian Championship of Lies was born in 1966. The reasons that led to the creation of this competition are to be found in the traditions of our little village over the Pistoia’s mountains, on the Italian Apennines, when in last century people used to meet in front of a fireplace to tell stories that mixed reality and fictious. The Italian Lie Academy, in occasion of the 50th Italian Lies championship, declares the graphics section contest dedicated to Lie.
This year theme is:
PINOCCHIO, THE KING OF LIARS, AND HIS FRIENDS

International Cartoon Contest on "Invisible Disability", Izmir 2026, Turkey

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES DIRECTORATE OF DISABILITY STUDIES
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
INTERNATIONAL CARTOON CONTEST ON
"INVISIBLE DISABILITY"
1. PURPOSE:
As İzmir Metropolitan Municipality the Directorate of Disability Studies, it has been deemed appropriate to organize an international cartoon contest themed “INVISIBLE DISABILITY” in order to raise public awareness in the field of disability, strengthen an equality-based and rights-based approach, and support accessibility in all areas of life.
Invisible disability refers to conditions that are not immediately apparent at first glance and are therefore often ignored or misinterpreted. Conditions such as epilepsy, MS (Multiple Sclerosis), chronic pain, autism spectrum differences, mental health conditions, and similar situations may affect an individual’s daily life, learning, working, communication, and sensory or physical endurance. However, since these conditions do not carry “visible” signs, individuals may face prejudices such as being labeled as “exaggerating,” “making excuses,” “lazy,” or “disrespectful” in public transportation, public service points, education, and working life. As a result, their requests for support and reasonable accommodations may be deemed unnecessary, leading to exclusion.
The aim of this contest is to make visible—through the language of cartoons—the misunderstandings, stigmatization, prejudices, and systemic barriers that invisible disabilities create in everyday life; to enhance empathy and social awareness; and to contribute to a more inclusive urban life.
We believe that participating cartoonists will address the theme of “invisible disability” in their works, making the issue visible and increasing both public awareness and social sensitivity.
2. THEME:
The theme of the contest is “INVISIBLE DISABILITY.”
2.1 The prejudice of “If it’s not visible, it doesn’t exist / there is no problem,” and the devaluation of invisible disabilities (e.g., attitudes such as “exaggerating,” “faking,” “making excuses,” “you’re young, what could be wrong with you?”)
2.2 Situations caused by misunderstandings in daily life (conflicts experienced in areas such as public transportation, queues/waiting areas, schools, workplaces, healthcare services, and public service processes)
2.3 The misconception that accessibility consists solely of physical arrangements, while invisible barriers persist due to communication, process design, environmental factors such as noise/light/crowds, and staff attitudes
2.4 Stigmatizing language, discrimination, and exclusionary discourse toward mental health conditions, autism, epilepsy, MS, chronic pain, and similar conditions
2.5 Appropriate approaches, understanding, and solidarity: how life can be made easier through small accommodations (respectful communication, privacy, flexibility, proper guidance, calming attitudes) and the strengthening of a rights-based perspective
3. TYPE AND FORMAT OF THE CONTEST:
This contest is organized as a free, international, single-stage fine arts competition, based on the provisions of the Regulation on Architectural, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, and Fine Arts Competitions, prepared in accordance with the relevant articles of Public Procurement Law No. 4734.

Hüseyin Çakmak: Alper Susuzlu has fought through his art

Alper Susuzlu, Founding Member and First General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Cartoonists Association, and an internationally renowned cartoonist, was laid to rest in Famagusta

HE FOUGHT AGAINST ALL THREATS WITH HIS ART

(February 18, 2026 – Nicosia) We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend Alper Susuzlu, a founding member and the first General Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Cartoonists Association, who gained international renown with his unique cartoon style.

Alper Susuzlu was a versatile artist who, in addition to cartoon, produced a wealth of work in painting and theater for many years. Through both his political views and his artistic endeavors, he made significant contributions, despite all threats, to the Cypriot Turkish Community and the Cypriot Turkish Socialist Movement, and more generally, to achieving a lasting solution to the Cyprus Problem and enabling the communities living in Cyprus to live together again.

Alper Susuzlu has supported organized actions for peace, democracy, human rights, and freedom of thought and expression through his art. For years, he has been at the forefront of political and artistic activities in pursuit of these goals. In particular, he has fought for the removal of barricades and borders in Cyprus through his drawings, ideas, and actions under the umbrella of the Cyprus Turkish Cartoonists Association. He received numerous threats and was targeted because of his political artwork, but he never backed down from the struggle he believed in.

Even though Alper Susuzlu has physically left us, he will continue to live on through his lasting works. We offer our condolences to his grieving family and loved ones.

Alper Susuzlu began drawing cartoons in 1982. His cartoons have been published in newspapers and magazines such as Yeni Düzen, Kıbrıs Postası, Akrep, Kıbrıs, Lololo, Vatan, Yeni Çağ, Demokrat, Karadeniz (Turkey), and Karikatür (Turkey).

He is one of the cartoonists who implemented the Universal Cartoon Period (1980 - 1990) in Turkish Cypriot Cartoon Art.

He is a founding member of the Cypriot Turkish Cartoonists Association. Between 1986 and 1990, he served as the General Secretary of the Cypriot Turkish Cartoonists Association.

His cartoons have been exhibited at international cartoon events in Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Yugoslavia, Turkey, England, Japan, Canada, Italy, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Cuba, Bulgaria, Norway, Switzerland, Peru, Germany, Macedonia, Egypt, Taiwan, South Korea, Iran, and Israel, and published in cartoon albums. His works are included in the collections of international cartoon museums in Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Peru.

In 1988, he founded the Cyprus Turkish Comedy Theatre and for many years wrote, directed, and staged numerous humorous-comedy plays dealing with local themes.

In the 1990s, he published cartoons in the "Comic Strip" style. In 1992, he published his personal cartoon album titled "Cartoons from the Island of Aphrodite".

His works have been featured in group exhibitions organized by the Cypriot Turkish Cartoonists Association. He has held solo cartoon exhibitions in Cyprus, Türkiye, England, Japan, and Macedonia.

He has won many important awards in national and international cartoon competitions. Some of these awards are:
First Prize: International Turkish Cartoonists Exhibition (1986 Basel – Switzerland),
Silver Medal: International Ancona Sports Cartoon Biennial (1987, 1988 Ancona – Italy),

Sinoplu Diogenes 5th International Cartoon Contest 2026, Turkey

SINOPLU DIOGENES 5th INTERNATIONAL CARTOON CONTEST
1. The contest is open to all amateur and professional artists worldwide.
2. The theme of the contest has been determined as:
REPUBLIC and DEMOCRACY”
In recent years in Türkiye, certain groups—despite benefiting from the democracy that functions, albeit imperfectly, thanks to the Republic, and enjoying the advantages of a postmodern lifestyle—have, with the boldness born of ignorance, openly expressed their desire to glorify and reinstate a one-man rule (the caliphate), a system rooted in medieval feudal governance.
The Republic, which came to life alongside the Industrial Revolution and encompasses fundamental principles such as democracy, the rule of law, citizens’ rights, and social equality, represents a progressive model of governance. Would it not require a kind of madness to abandon such a system?
As is well known, the concept of the Republic is not limited merely to governments coming to power through elections. Societies around the world expect from the Republican regime a healthy, sustainable, and continuously developing democracy. Fundamentally, this includes the equal and fair application of the law to every individual; the assurance that those in power are not above the law; and the guarantee that all citizens are equal before it.
In democracies safeguarded under Republican governance, fundamental rights and freedoms are secured and continuously expanded. Among the foremost rights in contemporary republican systems are freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and the right to education—essential elements of a healthy democracy.
Entrusting power to a single individual by abandoning a republic that prioritizes responding to the ever-changing needs of modern society, and replacing it with unchangeable dogmas dating back thousands of years, is not merely irrational—it is beyond absurd.
We expect participants to examine the concepts of Republic and democracy and to produce works that stand on the side of humanity and freedom.
