WORLD PRESS CARTOON 2012
World Press Cartoon has its eighth edition in 2012. To distinguish, exhibit, promote and award the best drawings published in the world press is still our mission. Caricatures, editorial and gag cartoons that will make a retrospective view of the world’s current affairs in 2011, views from different cultures, drawings where the cartoonists picture and criticize the ways of the world with humour and a sharp eye. The Jury’s task is always hard: many works from various cultures and a growing quality. To make judging easier and to guarantee the quality and rigour to the final selection, it is of the most importance that the authors read carefully the regulation and present their works in conformity with the rules it defines. An universal saloon demands an universal participation and clear and equal rules for everyone. Because the World Press Cartoon aims at gathering the best in the international production of humour drawings published in the Press every year, this is a meeting the professional cartoonists should not miss!
1. SPECIFICATIONS AND SCOPE
a) The World Press Cartoon covers three main categories: editorial cartoon, caricature and gag cartoon.
b) The World Press Cartoon is not a thematic event. Its objective is to distinguish the best cartoons created and published in 2011.
c) In the category EDITORIAL CARTOON, all entries must represent events and issue that marked the news in 2011.
d) In the category CARICATURE, only works in the strictest sense of the term will be considered, i.e., exclusively humorous portraits.
e) In the category GAG CARTOON, the works to be considered will feature subjects that are not directly related to current issues.
f) Authors are free to submit what they consider to be their best work, although clearly, those personalities, themes and events of a more universal nature will be best suited to such an international salon as the World Press Cartoon.
2. EXHIBITION
a) The exhibition of the selected works and the prize-giving ceremony will take place in the spring of 2012 at the following venues: Sintra Museu de Arte Moderna and Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval, both in Sintra.
3. ELIGIBILITY
a) Only the originals of the works will be accepted.
b) Top quality printed versions of works produced by digital or mixed techniques will be considered originals when they are signed by hand by the author, who must indicate the techniques and software used on the competition application form.
c) The original files of works produced by digital or mixed techniques must also be sent, either on CD, DVD or flash drive.
d) The format of the works cannot exceed the European standard A3: 420 x 297 mm.
e) Cartoonists are permitted to submit to the competition one original entry in each of the three categories of the salon: editorial cartoon, caricature and gag cartoon.
f) It is an essential pre-requisite for eligibility that the works were originally printed between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011 in newspapers or magazines, published on a regular basis and on sale to the public.
g) As proof of compliance with the preceding paragraph, each original must be accompanied by the respective full page of publication, on which the date and title of the newspaper or magazine is clearly visible (note that cuttings, pasted versions, photo¬copies or digital prints of the publication are not acceptable).
h) The author must also attach the header of the newspaper or magazine in which the work was published, making sure that both the size and quality will allow for its re¬production.
i) If the original work appears with a title, caption or any other wording, these must be translated into English, to be clearly written on the identification label that will be sent with the original.
j) The works should be received by the organization’s secretariat in Lisbon by January 31, 2012.
4. PACKAGING
a) Original works must be posted in flat packaging, between two hard boards.
5. WORK AND AUTHOR IDENTIFICATION
a) Each of the works for submission must carry an entry form and identification label, clearly filled in, and attached to the reverse side of the original.
6. JURY
a) The Jury of five members will be presided by the Salon director.
b) The WPC organisation under the management of the chairman of the Jury shall select the original works to be included in both the exhibition and the catalogue.
c) It is up to the Jury the award of prizes and honourable mentions.
d) The decisions of the Jury will be taken by majority vote and will be final.
7. SALE
a) The authors may choose to sell their works at the exhibition.
b) If an author wishes to sell his/her works, this should be clearly marked on the entry form and identification label, together with the intended price in euros.
c) The organization of the World Press Cartoon will add a gallery’s fee to the author’s original price.
d) The digital works will not be for sale.
8. RETURN OF THE WORKS
a) All of the works which comply with the terms of eligibility will be returned to their authors, whether they are selected or not to appear in the exhibition, except for works that are sold or that have won a prize or an honourable mention in the competition.
b) All exhibited works will be returned after the closure of the main exhibition in Sintra and subsequent tour exhibitions.
c) Digital prints will not be returned.
d) The author must provide his/her full postal address as indicated on the application form, including street, town/city, post code and country (Postal Office Box numbers are not accepted).
9. CATALOGUE
a) All authors whose works are selected to appear in the exhibition will receive a copy of the catalogue.
10. ROYALTIES
a) The submission of a completed entry form and identification label will automatically imply the waiving of the author’s royalties vis-à-vis the non commercial reproduction of his/her work.
b) The awarding of a prize to a specific work will automatically imply the waiving of its author’s royalties to the organization of the World Press Cartoon.
11. PRIZES
a) The structure of the prizes will be as follows:

b) Chosen from all the entries in the competition, the World Press Cartoon will award the best work with the Grand Prix of 20 000 euros.
c) The Grand Prix winning work will be chosen from the three first-prize winners in each category.
d) The author of the Grand Prix winning work will only receive the amount indicated for this prize, i.e., it will not be added to the amount indicated for winning the category first prize.
e) The prize values indicated above refer to gross amounts and therefore are subject to Portuguese taxation at the rate in force.
f) According to the standard of the works submitted to the competition, the Jury reserves the right not to award prizes in every category and level indicated in the structural table above.
g) All the prizes will be authenticated with a diploma and the winners will receive a trophy.
h) In addition, the Jury is permitted to select other works for the distinction of Honourable Mention, which will be symbolised by a medal and authenticated by a diploma.
i) All prize-winning works and those awarded honourable mentions become the property of the World Press Cartoon organisation.
j) Every newspaper or magazine in which a prize-winning work was published will receive a diploma in recognition of the World Press Cartoon award.
k) Every artist whose work is selected to appear in the exhibition and catalogue will receive a certificate to mark the participation in the salon.

THE 2nd YILMAZ GÜNEY FESTIVAL OF CULTURE AND ART
THE 2nd INTERNATIONAL DRAWING CONTEST
For the “2nd Yılmaz Güney Festival of Culture and Art”, organized by Yüz Çiçek Açsın Cultural Center, there will be a “2nd International Cartoon Contest” in addition to the movie, theatre, short story, poetry and photography contests. The general understanding which we wish to disseminate with these contests is not one of competition but one where different artistic interpretations and ideas come together and are shared with the people. Therefore, the goal is not to “compete and win” but to contribute to the development of art.
1 - The contest is open to artists from all over the world, professional or amateur.
2 - The contest will be comprised of two separate branches:
a) “Cartoons about cinema”
b) “Cartoons of Yılmaz Güney’s portraits”

3 - The work submitted must not have received an award at another contest. The works will be judged for their progressive, realistic and critical aspects which are important qualities of Yılmaz Güney’s cinema and are integral to the nature of the art of cartoon.
4 - Participants may submit any number of cartoons they wish. But a participant cannot receive more than one prize.
5 - The drawing sent should not be any larger than a sheet of A3 paper (29,7 cm x 42 cm). They must be in jpg format, with 300 dpi resolution.
6 - Works must be submitted until the 15th of February, 2012, via e-mail to the address karikatur.yilmazguneyksf@gmail.com .
7 - Participants must specify which branch of the contest they wish to take part in (“cinema” or “portrait”). When sending the work, the artists must send a word document containing their names, postal addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses along with a short resume and a photo of themselves. Artists under 18 must definitely specify their age as there will be a “promising young artist award.”
8 - Works which have received awards and/or were seen worthy of display will be brought together and published as an album. Those artists whose drawings are in the album will receive a copy.
9 - The exhibition of the contest will be displayed in various parts of Istanbul during the month of March. The award ceremony will take place on the 31st of March 2012, which is the final evening of the festival, in Istanbul. The participants who could attend the ceremony will have their prizes sent to their home addresses.
10 - Once the works have been evaluated, 4 participants for each category will receive the “Yılmaz Güney Honorary Award.” In addition, two participants from prison will receive the “Yılmaz Güney Freedom Award”, two participants under 18 will receive the “Promising Young Artist Award,” and one participant will receive the “Judge’s Special Award.”
11 - The jury will be comprised of the following artists: Paolo Dalponte (Italy), Elena Maria Ospina Mejia (Spain), Canol Kocagöz (Turkey), Musa Gümüş (Turkey), Kamil Yavuz (Turkey), and Aşkın Ayrancıoğlu (Turkey).
12 - The works which have been submitted to the contest will stay in the archives of the organization organizing the festival. The organization will have the right to use these works in its publications, posters, brochures, calendars etc. The artist will receive a copy of the publication whenever his/her work is used.
13 - All artists participating in the contest are assumed to have read and agreed with the terms stated above.

Catalog of 1st Gold Panda International Cartoon and Illustration Competition

Received yesterday the color catalog of the 1st Gold Panda International Cartoon and Illustration Competition 2011 from China, a long way with no damages in the post at all. Plus the Selected Prize Honor Certificate and the rules for the next competition. Many thanks to the organisers.

The catalog is 21x28.6 cm in size and has 32 pages with covers included. The front cover displays Alessandro Gatto's Best Work Prize cartoon in the frame.

The results of the competition is on page 28. From Turkey 5 cartoonists are in the list, yet only 4 cartoons in the catalog, if I am not mistaken.

The margins of the pages have illustrations of bamboo, the %99 diet of panda. About 5-6 cartoons/illustrations are published on each page. The works in the catalog are mostly on theme "panda", so there are quite few cartoons with "free" theme: one example here below as Blogger's Choice:

Received a couple of days ago the color catalog of DICACO 2011. According to the catalog, the winners of major prizes are:
Grand Prize: Yuriy Kosobukin (Ukraine) (See bottom)
Gold Prize: Jing Shan Li (China)
Silver Prizes: Zaenal Abidin (Indonesia), Gopal Sarkar (India).
Bronze Prizes: Valentin Druzhinin (Russia), Urmas Nemvalts (Estonia), Seyran Caferli (Azerbaijan), Muhittin Köroğlu (Turkey).
The catalog is also titled as “World Cartoon Encyclopedia Vol.20”. President of Contest Committee, Dr Cheong San Lim points out that they received 1470 cartoons by 463 cartoonists from 59 nations and regions including Korea and awarded 352 winners this year. The most entries are from the home country with 59 artists and 114 works. Korea is followed by Chinese artists (51), Iran (40), Serbia (38), Turkey (25), and Indonesia (24).

The front cover cartoon is by the Korean student, Han Na Cho: a theme cartoon. The theme this year was “Orient + Occident --> Convergence”. The organisers received 530 theme cartoons and 940 with free theme.

Kyoto International Cartoon Special Exhibition 2011: "Never giving up: Japan"

Received a couple of days ago the wonderful catalog of Kyoto International Cartoon Special Exhibition 2011 titled "Never giving up: Japan". The exhibition was held from 6th to 11th September in the Kyoto Municipal Museum, Annex. All entry fee will be contributed to victims of earthquake and tsunami. Now they are planning this exhibition in Fukushima.

With only two months' notice and no prizes this time, they still received about 300 cartoons by 127 cartoonists from 41 countries.

Among the artists contributing to the event are Ferhat Demirbaş, Kemal Özyurt, Osman Güral Suroğlu, Erdoğan Başol, Ahmet Ümit Akkoca, Eray Özbek, and Musa Gümüş, from Turkey.

The color catalog consists of 76 pages including the covers and is 18.2 x 25.7 cm in size. The cover cartoon is by John Jensen from UK and has the legend: "I've found our good luck charm. It's not even cracked." (Top above)

Sad news: Syriacartoon reports the death of the young cartoonist Rabee Aridi

Death of the young Syrian Arab cartoonist "Rabee Aridi"
The late cartoonist "Aridi" was born in Damascus in 1976.
He studied art through private non-academic sessions.
Aridi also participated in several local and regional art
exhibitions and galleries being awarded many times.
He was a prominent poster designer.
He left us to the other life yesterday, 23rd of September 2011.

Competition terms:
1. Each author can send maximum 5 original works.
2. The competition is open to everybody and it is not restricted in terms of artistic design methods.
3. The format of works should not exceed the A4 dimension.
4. The competition is non-anonymous. Each work should be signed on the reverse with the author´s name and full address. Electronic application form needs to be filled in when sending by email.

6th International Competition in Cartoon Humour for Children and Youth
Rules of contest:
Theme: Every man is the architect of his own health.
Jokes focused on healthy life style and on illness prevention (Sport, healthy food, toughening up…)
Age divisions:
A: 6 - 11 years
B: 12 - 17 years
Each participant could send maximum 3 cartoons either in black and white or in colour, with or without text.
The size of the cartoon should not exceed A4.
Deadline: 8th October 2011
Participants are requested to envelop information about the author or parents (name, surname, age, address, postcode and phone or email) and send cartoons.

Results and Prizes
The jury is consisted of representatives of organisers and partners. It will evaluate all sent cartoons and pronounce one winner in each age division.
Results will be announced in the transmission of the DDM hl. m. Prahy, Karlínské Spektrum (http://www.ddmpraha.cz/), on websites of the DTA (http://www.radiodomino.cz/), the ČUK (http://www.ceska-karikatura.cz/).
Winners will be informed by post, phone or email.
Prizes will be awarded on 22nd October 2011 at 2 pm on the occasion of opening the exhibition of the best works in the Karlínské Spektrum DDM hl. m. Prahy, Karlínské náměstí 7, Praha 8 - Karlín.
Prizes cannot be sent by post.

The UMO 7th International Cartoon Contest’11 is organized by UMO towards the World Usability Day. Participation is open to all cartoonists from every country in the world.
All the awarded and qualified cartoons will be exhibited. There is no Entry fee.

Theme for the Competition
Design Education for a Social Change
Education plays a vital role in the development of an active citizenry of a nation. A well educated population is able to take charge of the many issues facing society, including social problems and political decisions, rather than sitting by the sidelines and allowing someone else to do deciding for them.
Social change can be both positive or negative. History is filled with many revolutionary examples that has given us the world we live in today. Even today our educated societies are waging battles all over the world, be it in India against corruption or in the Middle East against governance or else where for a positive change.
The goal of education should simply be to provide opportunity for a student to look at the world through eyes and mind that do not merely accept status quo, but rather see the world as a place that can be changed by its citizens.
UMO's only agenda ever since its formation has been 'Good Design for Better Living'. But more importantly the route we have taken to accomplish this is by educating every one concerned about design through various initiatives. We always believed that spreading awareness is the best form of education. Programs like 'Boycott Bad Designs' has been the most participated and appreciated initiatives of UMO.
What makes it even more special is that 2011's World Usability Day theme is 'Design Education for a Social Change'.
Design in essence is a message, it is a medium through which designers and businesses communicate how a new product and service will make our lives both easier and exciting. We the design community should take the ownership of educating the users and consumers of products and services through better design. So much so that peripherals like communication design and information design around these products and services gets quite crucial in informing and educating users about them.
We welcome all enthusiasts of UMO to participate in our 7th year celebrations by spreading the spirit of good design even more strongly.
UMO encourages all enthusiasts to come up with humorous instances around consequences of wrong, irrelevant, misleading and insensitive information design. Your cartoons may reflect situations and incidences around information design we encounter in day to day business ranging from a piece of ticket (any ticket), forms/e-forms to labels & product packaging, medicine packaging/ labels, product manuals, movie posters, government notices, new papers, magazines, information systems, maps, signage, webpages and many others.

A jury will select the top 6 winning entries, the cartoonists will be granted a cash prize award of
First prize Rs.25,000/- (Rs. Twenty five thousand only)
Two second prizes of Rs. 10,000/- (Rs. Ten thousand only) each
Three Third prizes Rs. 5,000/- (Rs. Five thousand only) each, and,
Five Special mention awards.
An exhibition of the winning and short listed entries will be held and UMO will publish an exhaustive works report.

For Judgment jury will use criteria such as creativity, humor, visual communication, presentation, persuasiveness, originality, cleverness, relevance of content and execution to identify the winner.

2. CATEGORIES:
Free Theme
“Charge”: Graphic joke about nowadays journalistic theme
Cartoon: Graphic joke with universal and atemporal themes
Caricature: recognizable graphic distortions of personalities
THEMATIC CARICATURE:
Míriam Leitão (ACQUISITIVE)
Journalist, writer and economist.
All the works inscribed in this category, independently to be selected or not, will be acquisitives for the Cultural Station Association of Caratinga.
3. TECHNIQUES:
Dimension: 30 cm x 40 cm
Number of works: Each competitor will be able to participate with two works for each category, that has not won at no other gallery or salon.
The works must be unpublished and original. The graphical technique is free. Digital copies, signed by author and indicated that it is print number 01 and sculptures with humorous content, will be accepted.
4.AWARDNESS:
It will be awarded a total of 20 thousand Reais ( R$) in prizes, divided as follows:
A) Three Prizes for 1st Place on the value of R$3,000,00 for each category;
B) Three Prizes for 2nd Place on the value of R$ 2,000,00 for each category;
C) Three Prizes for 3rd Place on the value of R$ 1,000,00 for each category;
D) A 1st Place prize to “Thematic Category” on the value of R$2,000,00.
The prizes in cash will be paid by Caratinga City Hall.
(*) All the finalists mentioned above will receive the “Pererê Trophy”, besides the prizes in cash; all of them offered by Caratinga City Council.
It will be awarded by the Judging Commission five Certificates of Honorable Indication in all categories.
5. JUDGEMENT:
There will be a jury for selection and another one for awardness, made up by specialized people on the area.
The awardness jury keeps itself the right of not designating prizes to the categories which don’t achieve a sufficient level, transferring them to other categories or creating a special prize of the Salon.
If the awardness jury confirms any kind of irregularity, fraud or plagiarism in one of the inscribed works, it will be able to cancel the award, offering the same one to the following artist from classification list. Awarded works will be spread on the Salon’s site after its opening and they will be contested in the period of one week after salon’s opening with reasonable proves on any irregularity done without jury’s knowledge. Another prizes and indications will be set according to Organizer Commission.

Full address with Zip Code, telephone number, CIC, Identity Card, bank data, e-mail or the candidate can paste a copy of inscription available on the site, with all data filled in.
ATTENTION/ RETURN:
The works will be returned until the end of five months after the event on April 10th, 2012; only to the artists that has sent a stamped special envelope joined together with the works. Those which were sent without envelope will be automatically given to the itinerant and permanent heap exhibition of the salon.
When inscribing, the author transfers automatically, authorial rights of his works when awarded acquisitivetely, according to the Law Nb. 9610, February,1998 (Authorial Rights Law), therefore, universal and definitely in all use modalities and gratuitous, the rights of the author, guaranteed by the mentioned law; referring to the awarded work in the International Humor Salon of Caratinga and now integrant part of National Cultural Heap and Research and Graphic Humor Spread from Caratinga Cultural Association Station; that reserves itself the rights to use them the way it judges better.
Simply the inscription implies automatically that you agree with the terms of this regulation.
