The 9th Alanya International Cartoon Competition 2025, Turkey

9TH ALANYA INTERNATIONAL
CARTOON COMPETITION SPECIFICATIONS
The International Mediterranean Cartoon Competition, which was first held in 2001 and last held in 2008, will be reorganized for the 9th time in 2025 - after 17 years - under its new name of Alanya International Cartoon Competition, in cooperation with Alanya Municipality and Alanya Tourism Promotion Foundation (ALTAV).
SUBJECT OF THE COMPETITION: LIVING IN A WORLD WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
The Turkish Language Association has determined the concept of 2024 as “crowded loneliness”. While the world is preparing for a new order with artificial intelligence, it can be considered normal for the old people of the planet to struggle. Since we are now closer neighbors with our smart devices supported by artificial intelligence, we may feel lonely in crowds. Because technological developments that are accelerating day by day negatively affect our human relations the most.
Although cultures are different, we know that neighborliness is highly valued in every society. In the old world where technology did not take over our lives to this extent, weren’t our neighbors the closest proof that we were not alone in crowds?
Artificial intelligence-supported technologies are an inseparable part of our lives today and they don’t seem to have any intention of slowing down. As the old people of the new order, we continue to live in a world with artificial intelligence - with its pros and cons - and to get used to our new neighbors in this new world a little more every day.

The color catalog of the International Cartoon Festival in Saitama 2024, Japan

Received yesterday the color catalog of the International Cartoon Festival in Saitama, Japan. It was the 34th year of the festival in 2024. I participated in the event with two cartoons of mine, one titled "Here you are!" on the theme of UCHU which means "The Universe" and the second one of Free theme. Works on both themes by 40 Japanese and 39 foreign artists are included in the catalog of the exhibition that took place at Plaza North in November 2024.
Saitama City is the place where Rakuten Kitazawa - the father of modern cartoon in Japan - spent his later years. The Saitama Municipal Cartoon Art Musem in the home to Kitazawa in his later years hold the Saitama-City Rakuten-Kitazawa Manga Awards competition each year. In 2024 they held the 39th edition and the winning cartoons are included in this collection book of "The Best Cartoons of Nippon" which are also displayed on the museum website here.
The standard A4-sized (21x29.7 cm) catalog of "The Best Cartoons of Nippon 2024" has almost 100 pages, about 70 of them covering the color and the monochrome cartoons participated in the festival and selected for the catalog. The remaining pages are the lists of the Japanese and the Foreign artists with their personal histories in both Japanese and English. With this perfectly designed book of art in hand, it is possible to compare the style and wit of the native and overseas manga/cartoon artists and enjoy the great humour in their works.
From Turkey are published the works of the following cartoonists in the catalog: Aşkın Ayrancıoğlu, Erdoğan Başol, Kamil Yavuz, Kemal Özyurt, Muammer Kotbaş, Musa Gümüş, Oğuz Gürel, Seyit Saatçi, and Hüseyin Çakmak from Cyprus.
Thank you to the festival organizers and the staff of Plaza North who sent me this great collection of manga/cartoon art.

The 6th Edition of Fartoon - Faro International Cartoon Exhibition, promoted by FARO1540 - Association for the Defense and Promotion of Faro's Environmental and Cultural Heritage, will be under the theme “Thinking Freedom, Building Democracy”. This event, which has become a landmark in the region's cultural scene, will take place in the context of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974, a historic moment that returned freedom and democracy to Portugal.
The theme of this edition invites artists from all over the world to reflect, through humor and creativity, on the importance of preserving and caring for democracy. More than a celebration, the festival is an opportunity to reinforce democratic values and principles and promote an intergenerational discussion about the future of this vital achievement.
At a time when the world faces new challenges to fundamental freedoms, it is essential to remember the legacy of April 25 and the collective commitment to affirm democracy as a pillar of society. Fartoon emerges as a platform for reflection and expression, where cartoon art acts as a universal language capable of raising awareness and uniting different generations around a common cause.
“This year, more than ever, we want to highlight the importance of taking care of our democracy so that it remains alive and strong for future generations. Cartoons play an essential role in helping us reflect on these issues critically, but also with lightness and humor,” highlighted Paulo de Oliveira Botelho, Chairman of the Board of Faro1540.
Since its first edition, Fartoon has promoted freedom of expression and creativity through graphic humor, with the participation of artists from different countries. This year, the festival is expected to bring together dozens of works that address the theme “Thinking Freedom, Building Democracy”, offering the public a unique experience of art and reflection.
