22nd World Press Freedom Canada International Editorial Cartoon Competition 2022

22nd World Press Freedom Canada International Editorial Cartoon Competition
1. The theme for the 22nd International Editorial Cartoon Competition is:
Silence is golden
Cancel culture has become a source of our newest cultural cleavage.
Whether it be on social media or at live events, 'cancelling' someone has become a modern day version of excommunication and is being used as a weapon by political partisans both left and right to discourage civil discourse and media freedom.
In opposing systemic racism, misogyny and xenophobia, progressives feel the need to resort to extreme tactics in an attempt to be heard.
Fearing that history is being re-written, traditionalists, for their part, use cancel culture to silence critics and whitewash history's wrongs.
2. Three prizes will be awarded: a first prize of $1,500 plus a Certificate from the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, a second prize of $750 and a third prize of $500. All sums are in Canadian dollars. Ten additional cartoons will receive an Award of Excellence, which are not remunerated.
3. Only one cartoon may be submitted by each participant, either in colour or black and white, but must not have won an award previously.
4. The size of the cartoon should not exceed A4 (21 x 29.2 cm) or 8.5 x 11 inches, and should be in jpeg or pdf format at 300 dpi.
5. The name, address, telephone number and a short biography of the participant must be included in the submission.
6. World Press Freedom Canada reserves the right to use the winning cartoons for promotion of the Cartoon Competition.
7. The winners of the Cartoon Competition will be announced on World Press Freedom Day on Tuesday May 3, 2022 and will be notified by e-mail.

Catalog of the 9th International Cartoon Contest, Kyrenia 2020, Cyprus

Received yesterday the color catalog of the 9th International Cartoon Contest, Kyrenia 2020, Cyprus. My Finalist Prize Certificate did also arrive with the catalog.
The album is 20x21.5x2 cm in dimensions and has 240 full color pages plus the covers. It is published in June 2021 and mailed to the participants despite the difficulties in the New Normal that the Covid-19 pandemia brought about the recent years. The 887 pieces by 289 cartoonists from 62 countries submitted to the event in 2020 are "resisting Covid-19" as Nidai Güngördü, the Mayor of Kyrenia Municipality, puts it concisely in his foreword.
And M. Serhan Gazioğlu, the President of Cypriot Turkish Cartoonists Association, reminds in his introductory words that "Due to Covid-19 outbreak, which shortly turned into a pandemic and the global halt of postal services and restrictions in national and international air transport, the deadline to register for the contest, which was 30 April 2020, had been extended to 31 August 2020 and world cartoonists were notified".
This weighty book perfectly covers the short bios plus cartoons or portraits of the jury members and prize-winners in both Turkish and English languages, snapshots of the jury meeting, the 19th Digital Olive Festival Opening Ceremony, the symbolic prize-giving ceremony and some touristic scenes from the historical town along with the winning and the many selected cartoons. There are also the special pages for the biographies and the work of the winners of the Gold Olive Outstanding Contribution Prizes 2020.
The cartoon on the front cover is by the Colombian artist Raul Fernando Zuleta and the one on the back belongs to the Italian cartoonist Marco D'Agostino.
Thank you to the organisers of the International Cartoon Contest, Kyrenia 2020, for sending me this great collection of cartoon art.
