2nd Cartoon Competition - Çorum / Turkey

ÇORUM JOURNALISTS’ ASSOCIATION 2nd Cartoon Competition
Theme: Are we going to burn or freeze?
Aim: Our world is getting polluted rapidly from many sides for the last two hundred years. The gases come out of the factories’ and houses’ chimneys and of the exhaust of the motor vehicles –having increased rapidly after the Industrial Revolution – are causing the climate changes which have never seen before since the Ice Age, which was millions of years ago. The regression of gradually melting glaciers to the polars and the loss of ice cap on high mountains, the rise of sea level, the migration of plant & fish species, the decrease in the number of bird species because of the air pollution, the rapid growth of the annual rings in trees are, of course, the indicators of rapidly warming in the earth.
However, the meteorologists are talking about the probability of shutdown of the Gulf Stream warm water current, which is transporting the warm sea water from the equator to the western Europe, because of the melting of the North Pole glaciers; and finally, the possibility of a new ice age in Northwest Europe at the end. In other words, the global warming can bring our world to a new ice age at the end. It is uncertain/indefinite whether we’re going to burn or freeze as a result of the global climate change.
Arranging the second cartoon competition, Çorum Journalists’ Association aims to reflect the effects of the global climate change on natural world under the title of “Are we going to burn or freeze?” with the universal language of cartoons.

8th Biennale “Humour & Vigne” 2008 - France

What is the meaning of «Humour & Vigne»? To what does «Vigne» refer?
«Humour & Vigne» is the name of the biennial festival and its organising association. In choosing the word «vigne» (both vine and vineyard) rather than «vin» (wine) the organisers offer artists a broader spectrum of choice which could include, for example: the plant, the stock, the leaves, the grapes, the grape juice and of course the wine! Numerous other products such as Cognac, Pineau des Charentes, Champagne etc… without forgetting the vineyard and the men who cultivate and plant the vines on their own very particular soil. Again the cellars, the distillery, the barrels, the bottles and the glasses for the joy of tasting. In short, we could decline over several pages the list of concepts that cover the word «vigne».
Cartoons and the vine both facilitate an exchange which goes beyond the barriers of language adding to the pleasure and well being of all peoples.
What is the biennial festival?
Since 1994, held every two years in the summer, the festival of Jonzac has gained international renown. The programme includes exhibitions, spectacles, and humorous entertainements. The festival welcomes artists and supports regional and international links. The event gives the opportunity to publish a catalogue, a poster and humorous wine labels. Every festival keeps a general theme of «Humour & Vigne» and every time proposes a unique subject: Cognac in 1996, Earth and Sea in 1998, Millennium Merriment in 2000, the Kitchen in 2002, Art in 2004, Sport in 2006 and Love in 2008 (Guest of honour will be Bridenne).
Who is concerned?
In 2006, 275 cartoonists (numbering amongst them some famous names and many members of FECO) from over forty countries, submitted about 700 artworks half of which were selected for inclusion in the exhibition. About 20 cartoonists, a dozen of performance artists, thirty or more organising volunteers and sixty supporters and sponsors were present.
All the above contributed to the success of the event, as did the 35.000 (approx) visitors who attended the exhibition in Jonzac and others towns in France.
Where and when is it?
In Jonzac town of water and of Pineau situated between Cognac and Bordeaux. From 21st June to 15th July 2008. Inauguration and celebration Saturday 28th June 2008.
In brief
«Humour & Vigne» has no other ambition than to unite the talents of cartoonists worldwide around a theme generous in its interpretation. A small festival in a small town with a small budget but a high investment from volunteers creating bonhomie between the invited artists, participants, and organisers.
The organising committee of “Humour & Vigne”

Dalibor Pavic exhibition at Cartoon Gallery Osijek

Respected colleagues, faithfull readers...
On the day of October 29, this year in Cartoon Gallery Osijek at 6.00 pm we have opened the exhibition of Croatian artist Dalibor Pavic - Paky. We named the exhibition «Different Face of Cartoon».
PAKY was born on 9th of March, 1973 in Osijek where he finished elementary and high school. Even though from early youth he showed aptitude toward music and art, he deals with it intensively from 1990. He composes and arranges songs.
First independent exhibition he prepared in October 2000 in Osijek where he lives and works. He had 7 independent exhibitions till now. He has partaken in 12 collective exhibitions and 14 art colony. He has illustrated 2 books «Jesus and non-violence» and « Love is still looking for us».
Exhibition was opened by PhD sc. Zlata Zivakovic – Kerze. Extract from the speech:
«Paky have exhibit 10 of his works in oil technic; with white color on black background , or vice versa he distorts reality and accomplishes impression of mockery. In distortion of heads Paky excesses on purpouse and in that way he emphasizes significant attributes of human character – anxiety, anger, passivity... They are individuals, self-sufficient, passive observers on whose faces you can see that they are under burden with every day concerns... they dont smile.»
Paky played his guitar with chello professor Zeljko Strbac. That was the first time that they have seen each other in their life but they created a great atmosphere with their instruments. When we opened the exhibition Paky played one more time his guitar, but this time by himself.
We have enjoyed with baked chestnuts and boiled wine.
We love you and appreciate your effort!

24th Aydin Dogan prize-giving ceremony

The prize-giving ceremony of the 24th International Aydin Dogan Cartoon Competition was done on Nov 6, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey. It was pleasure to meet Mr & Mrs Gatto from Italy, Mr & Mrs Boligan from Mexico, Mr & Mrs Nakahara from Japan, and Mr Shibu and his interpreter from India. Of course there were some other artists present at the ceremony while the First Prize winner Ms Marina Markevitch was absent due to her child's illness.
About the similarity of his cartoon, Mr Shibu and his interpreter told me that the artist lives in a remote place in India where he has very limited access to the world of cartoon and therefore has no info about previous creation of the cartoon.
Here are a few shots from the ceremony evening:

"Last Exit Before Doom!" - Manisa / Turkey

1st INTERNATIONAL MANISA-MESIR CARTOON CONTEST - TURKEY
“LAST EXIT BEFORE DOOM !”
As you know, we humans have put our world through very big troubles.
The obvious reasons of disaster are countless: Excessive growth in population, million tones of solid, liquid and gas waste, consumption of water and energy, urban plunder, chopping of forests, wars and bomb experiments, usage of hormones and pesticides, transformed genes, tankship tragedies, etc. And the results: Global warming, polluted waters, the hole in the ozone layer, ascending epidemic diseases, both drought and floods, erosion of the agricultural soil, massive poverty and hunger, extincting plant and animal species... We have to believe that it is still possible to save our only homeland, our world and have to try doing that.
We are calling all cartoonists in the world to produce dramatic pieces for our sensibility in this subject.
In our contest, we hope to see the proficiency of new cartoonists and innovations of masters.
